This Month's Recommended Read
Reviewed by Betty Rogers Raimer,
Powell resident and your fellow Mature Reader
Ms. Sinclair is a Jamaican poet, who left her country to seek freedom. What separates her story from that of a traditional immigrant story are her parents' belief in Rastafarianism. Along with Ms. Sinclair's struggles, we learn about a religion which dominates the Sinclair household. Her father sets the rules, believing he is a small god, enforcing his dictates with beatings and seclusions. He only permits his daughters to touch "Babylon" -- the outside world -- by attending school, and it is through education they can leave. This is a very well-written memoir.

If you've enjoyed this edition of the Mature Reader, please share it with your friends! We'll be back next month with more just for you.
