This Month's Recommended Read
Reviewed by Betty Rodgers Raimer,
Powell resident and your fellow Mature Reader
This is a novel about love, and the bond between humans and animals. In the logging forests of New Brunswick, Canada, a baby girl is born to the camp cook and his wife, the local healer. At the same time, the man brings home an abandoned bear cub. His wife nurses both the baby and the bear. Pearly Everlasting (named for a medical herb) comes to see the bear, Bruno, as her brother. When Bruno is accused of a crime he didn't commit and sold for his fur, Pearly goes after him. This novel is a tremendous exploration of love and the tenacity at the heart of it.
