This Month's Recommended Read
Reviewed by Betty Rodgers Raimer,
Powell resident and your fellow Mature Reader
The Women by Kristen Hannah
"The Women" is the story of the nurses who served in Vietnam. Not only do they deal with the horrors of war, they have to deal with contempt and disparagement.

Frankie, the protagonist of this novel, is raised in a deeply conservative area, where women are not raised to go to war. Her father is so ashamed that he lies about her absence.

When Frankie returns to the US, opinions have changed, and even the VA does not recognize her service. Her return is difficult, her recovery hard -- a statement which might be true of the entire country. It's a great book that I am happy to recommend!

If you've enjoyed this edition of the Mature Reader, please share it with your friends! We'll be back next month with more just for you.
