Get Ready for Kindergarten!

Welcome to the Delaware County District Library's newsletter to help you prepare your young reader for Kindergarten!

Tune in every week as we journey through the alphabet, explore core concepts like colors and shapes, and introduce success skills such as using scissors and zipping your coat. We'll provide proven tools to help introduce these materials to your youngster and get them ready and excited to learn more!

Every week we'll feature a video made by a Delaware County District Library staff member that teaches your little learner how to draw the letter of the week, along with book recommendations, songs, storytimes, and other resources to add to your at-home curriculum.

A is for ANT!

Join children's librarian Miss Melissa as she helps your young reader learn all about the letter A. Draw along with our fun video!

The letter A is also for...

This week's tip: Numbers are everywhere! An easy way to sneak some math into your reading is to count objects on a page with your child, or note whether more or fewer of something appears in the story. Try it with your next book!

Play

Animal Upon Animal: In this dexterity game, players will take turns stacking various wooden animal pieces on top of a crocodile. The first player to successfully stack all their animals wins the game.

Play It

Sing

Ants Go Marching: The Ants Go Marching is a super fun children's song that's great to practice rhyming and counting! Parents will recognize the familiar tune, too.

Sing It

Raise your hand to ask a question or offer an answer! An important classroom skill is learning when to listen and when it's okay to talk. Help your child practice raising their hand when they have something to say instead of shouting out.

The Color RED

Can you spot something red? Ask your child to look around and find something red. If you're in the kitchen, talk about red foods like apples or strawberries. Ask your child to find something red in their closet and wear this week's color.

💡 Play time tip! Make or print a red stop sign, and then play wiggle-freeze! Turn on a song and let your child dance until you hold up the stop sign -- then it's time to FREEZE!

We hope you have fun this week! We'll be back next week with the letter B.
